The best place is to get it somewhere under the LCD bezel because:
1. Height helps
2. You router sends out a vertically polarized signal. Antenna works better if it is vertically polarized (up and down rather than flat like a PCMCIA WiFi card).

After having to listen to everyone crowing about this in the forums [;-)] I
decided to finally get off the mark and perform this upgrade on one of my spare
600Xs.
Swapped a spare Intel combo WiFi/modem for the modem in the unit and installed
IBM Access Connections. Works a treat under W2K as long as I'm sitting within a
few feet of one of my WAPs.
Now to figure out where to put the antennae I've got and where to get some more.
Where'd you get your antennae from Chris?

James
