[Thinkpad] Problems after replacing an UltraBay DVD/CDRW drive

Hi list!

My T23's DVD/CD-RW drive died on me. It was the TEAC DW-28E that
originaly came with my T23.

Since I didn't want to pay the premium of buying an official
IBM-approved drive, I just bought a NEC ND6500A DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. I
took out the special adapter from my old drive, and fitted it on the
new drive. I also attached the plastic side rails that seemed necessary
for the new drive to perfectly fit in the UltraBay of my T23, and it
did.

It all worked like a charm. DVD/CD reading and writing... the drive is
obviously fine, and compatibility seemed fine, until (a few days later)
my T23 started beeping and the rightmost LED started flashing,
indicating that a UltraBay device is being inserted/ejected. I wasn't
even using the drive at the time. After a few minutes of beeping, the
light stopped flashing and just went off. With it went my drive.

The only temporary workaround I've found so far is to put the T23 to
sleep (Fn+F4) and then wake it up again. This only fixes things for a
random interval (1 minute to 8 hours), after which the whole procedure
(beeping/flashing) starts again.

Could anyone explain this or suggest a remedy?

Thanks in advance.

-A
