Well, in Mr. Clark's defense, he asked for some information, and Bruce
said "that machine is not up to the latest operating systems, and
there is not much you can do about that". Now he meant "I have a lot
of experience with thinkpads, and I know what upgrades are possible
for that machine, and it is basically none for any reasonable about of
money and effort, even you have a hundred times more time than money,
so unless you are creating a museum piece for the Smithsonian you
would be wasting your energy to start out down what will inevitably be
a dead end road," but you can probably see how it might be interpreted
as "Don't be such a cheap bastard," if you don't know all the
background.
