If IBM wants to jerk you around like that... jerk them back. If the TP is
still under warranty, place a service call and tell them your HD has died.
They'll ship you a replacement drive and a set of recovery disks, and you
just ship the drive back to them and keep the CDs.

[Thinkpad] Re: Transfer IBM preload from hard drive
Thanks for the tip, which sounded so good I called IBM right away. As
always seems to be the case, they weren't able to help. Not allowed to
release the CDs under agreement with Microsoft. Would only consider it if
the automated recovery (ie hitting the Access IBM button) failed.
Mentioned difficulty of upgrading HD - no problem - so long as you buy the
drive from IBM UK under some upgrade scheme. Not an option for me &
suspect their price wouldn't be that competitive.
Having tried and failed with IBM, do you think the Ghost/Partition plan
would work?
Not sure where you're based but I get the feeling that IBM in other parts
of the world - especially the UK - have much better service.
Best wishes
Simon

A: What I did was call support and say, hey I'd like to free up the extra
space but don't want to lose the backup, and they sent me a handful of CDs
which I received maybe 2 days later.
