[Thinkpad] external USB boot-device for ThinkPad X31

Hi

I have a question. I own a ThinkPad X31 (model 2672 1LG).
I do not have the X3 UltraBase and I can not afford buying it right now.

For some other reason (which has nothing to do with my X31) I need a
possibillity to connect a normal IDE-device (HDD or DVD-RW) via USB (or
FireWire) to the PC. My thinking is to combine two things.

I would like to buy something that my X31 is able to boot from if an
optical drive is connected.
Does anybody of you know a working combination ? The less the cost the
better ;-) although I know I will have to pay some money.
