Hello Rei,
The specification of harddisk that you bought were quoted with capacity of
80GB means 80,000,000,000 bytes (or 80 billion bytes). Check the little
print on the footnote in ThinkPad brochures as well as harddisk spec.
The capacity you saw in Windows XP is an actual Gigabyte capacity, not
billion bytes capacity. Do you know that 1 Kilobytes is 1024 bytes, 1
Megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes and 1 Gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes? Hence,
80,000,000,000 bytes is 74.5 Gigabytes.
For the pre-loaded 40GB harddisk from ThinkPad, it's 40 billion bytes which
is 37.25 Gigabytes but there is an IBM Service Partition size about 3 or 4
GB which cause WindowsXP to see it as about 34GB.
I hope the answer is not too late as I only got the list in digest format.
Cheers,
Rakkiat
