You could simply shrink the C partition and create the D partition you
desire.

Partition Magic, for one, will accomplish that nicely. Acronis has Disk
Director for the same purpose.
No need to image the drive when a real time resizer will do the job.

On the other hand, and since you asked, I have used the "wipe, reload and
install only what I want" method many times.
I prefer that, as it leaves behind no traces of the offending items I didn't
like in the first place.
Why bother with cleaning the registry of a brand spanking new unit once you
get it set up, to rid yourself of every stub created by software you hhve
removed?

Start fresh and you have the perfect template. Use the IBM software
installed to get the balance of the utilities you prefer. That is a great
tool. Access Connections is one I couldn't live without.
If the load from scratch method is what you select, be sure to only use
hardware drivers from IBM, never the ones offered by MS Windows Update.
Trust me on that.
