Certain recent T43 models (my 2669-C4U is an example)
have a bios check for the disk model. I think this is
limited to machines that have a sata - pata converter
and use pata disks. I tried to put a 7200 RPM Hitachi
60 GB disk in - the machine issued a warning and stoped
booting. I was able to update the disk firmware and
then it worked. There is a very long thread on the
issue at the forums at thinkpad.com. Many disks that
don't have IBM specific firmware trigger the fault.

The warning indicates that there may be data loss if
you continue with the problematic disk.
