A 600E can use PC66 or PC100 memory. The 600X requires PC100.
Kahlon's price for a new 256MB PC100 SO-DIMM is $63. I'm a happy
customer. Crucial is asking $69. (Oooh. They're selling PC133 parts but
guarantee them to work in a 600X. I've never known a PC133 part to work
in a 600X. Learn something every day, I guess.)
The loud fan is not typical. As Bruce wrote, it's the same thing as in
your 600E. Sounds like the "new" one is in rough shape.
