Lots of people use the same number for fax and voice calls. You can do it
with cheap or free software; I had this capability with the old WinFax that
came bundled with my computer years ago. The phone line would have to be
connected to a computer with a fax modem. If you use the phone for voice all
the time, you'd set the fax modem to "manual". When you answer the phone and
hear a fax squeal, you can choose to receive the fax. Here, I found
instructions from the current WinFax Pro:
If you answer a fax call on a shared voice/fax line - Do not hang up the
handset right away. Right click the Controller icon In the Windows system
tray and click Manual Receive Now. When you hear your modem pick up the line
and the message "Answering ." appears on the Line Status dialog, hang up the
handset.
You don't have to keep the whole WinFax program running, just the Controller
portion to respond when you click on it.
Or route the line to your fax machine as well as to your personal handset.
No software required; just hit "start" when you encounter a fax squawk on
the line.
