Someone else emailed me about this off-list today. I might try it,
though a software/modem (or many modems - I have boxes of 'em, internal
,external, pcmcia, you name it) solution would be more satisfying.

That's an easy one, I never want to use a computer fax again, nor any
other kind of fax.

Yes, this is what I already do on those rare occasions when I am around
and expecting a fax on my own line (instead of the departmental fax
machine).
What I really want is not to come into my office after being elsewhere,
see the answering machine blinking, and - when I press it - find the
tape full of beep-beep-beeps. The dimwits who fax the athletics office
don't give up after they fail to connect - they try again and again and
again and again. On one occasion I got back to the office to find
they'd completely filled a 60 minute tape, causing my answering machine
to stop answering, and they were still at it - I had time in that case
to boot a laptop, run Winfax, hook it to the phone, and capture the fax
(ultimately embarrassing for both faxer and intended recipient).

Talkworks (also just suggested to me by John LaBella). I no longer have
a 701, but this is a good idea, which I will pursue, especially if it is
no longer as flaky as it was, and isn't too expensive.
Thanks all.
