Thanks Bruce,

Changing to Diagnostic Boot (from Quick Boot) did the trick and
allowed me to use the Maintenance Disk to add type, model, and serial
number. Thanks!

It also meant that I could install System Updater and use it to
download and install 9 updates. Though two of them said they couldn't
install, System Updater said they did. Perhaps they were the same
version as previously.

However...

I noticed the BIOS was still v3.21 (current is v3.23) and that System
Updater didn't try to update it. So I ran the 3.23 myself but it
wouldn't launch! I tried both from Windows Explorer and using Run as
instructed in the readme. In both cases it announced itself as the
3.23 installer, went through Flash Update screens 1/4 through 4/4,
then Windows XP shuts down, I get the IBM ThinkPad logo, and Windows
launches (i.e. the computer reboots). Never a DOS menu.

Is there something else I can be trying?

Thanks!
