I don't know whether to be pleased or dejected,
as this thinkwiki article says the 120GB Seagate disk "works out of the box",
which mine certainly does not,
although there is the caveat that "Even drives with identical part numbers
may carry firmware with different compatibility status,
so do not blindly rely on this list."
I've tried the main solution suggested in the article,
namely to install the IBM/Lenovo firmware upgrade,
but this had no effect.
(I was told I already had the most recent firmware.)
What is slightly depressing is to read that the problem has been there
for at least 2 years, so the advice to wait for Lenovo to provide a solution
is not very comforting.
Actually, I'm not too badly off,
as I can put the disk in my T23,
and choose a replacement a little more carefully ...
