I will put a mention of this in the release notes for the upcoming 7.8.0 release. I was about to write that this wasn't a big deal because you could always write (define-syntax sequence begin) but I just tried that and it didn't work. After 20 minutes of poring over the code I have found out why and will fix it. The motive for the port was SPEED of processing some pretty large files. I am using Dorai's Pregexp library of Perl regular expressions. http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/dorai/pregexp/pregexp.tar.gz The base scheme code is in pregexp.scm which is all I need. If I take the raw downloaded source file pregexp.scm, add the usual (declare (usual-integrations)) and attempt to compile it via cf I get an Abort! out of memory error. V7.7.1 Linux RH 8.0 1. I can use pregexp.scm without errors when I load the src file from the REPL. 2. I can scode compile the file as well via sf and fasload it. The pp of the fasload bin file looks "normal". 3. However if I try and compile the file I get an Abort! out of memory error. 4. Increasing stack, constant and heap settings have no impact. 5. The method that fails to compile is pregexp-match-positions-aux which is the heart of the system. 6. I have attempted to isolate where or what is causing the compile to fail and it appears to be the "size" of the procedure. It also appears that it just barely fails to compile. If I comment out an arbitrary 3 or 4 small and innocent appearing elements of the case statement, it compiles clean. 7. In summary, I can get it to compile by simply trimming arbitrary parts of the code out and slightly shrinking the procedures overall size. 8. My guess is that the OOM is a red herring which is a result of exceeding a pre-set size limit in the compiler or code generator, or when an error message of the actual problem is attempted to be generated. Hate to drop this one on you while you are attempting wrap up the migration and get 7.8 out the door. However, I think I have hit this compilation bug a couple of times. But in this case, because of the nature of the method, iterative parsing, I don't see how I could re-factor the method to alleviate the out of memory issue. Please ask if there is anything I could do to help solve the issue. I did spend some time looking at the mem sizes, and playing with the method in an attempt to isolate the problem. It appears to be the overall size of the method, lines, variables, tail calls, loops, case and/or cond conditions, number of lets, lambdas etc.. and not a particular line of code or the construction of a line of code in the procedure itself. Thanks, Ray From cph at zurich.ai.mit.edu Sat Apr 19 22:42:47 2003 From: cph at zurich.ai.mit.edu (Chris Hanson) Date: Sat Dec 3 00:47:08 2005 Subject: [bug-cscheme] Out Of Memory During Compiling In-Reply-To: <1050773537.29041.33.camel@aragon> (rracine@adelphia.net) Message-ID: Date: 19 Apr 2003 13:32:16 -0400 From: Raymond Racine I have a small log file analyzer utility that I originally wrote in PLT/MzScheme that I have ported over to GNU/MIT (whats with Scheme system implementers and slashed hybrid naming schemes anyway :) ). I hate to sound like RMS, but please call it MIT/GNU Scheme, not GNU/MIT Scheme. This program has always been MIT project for over 20 years (it predates GNU), and is just now becoming a GNU project, so it's fitting that MIT's name come first. 3. However if I try and compile the file I get an Abort! out of memory error. 4. Increasing stack, constant and heap settings have no impact. The "out of memory error" means that the heap is too small. How large a heap have you tried? On GNU/Linux systems, the maximum value is usually somewhere over 6000 blocks. You can tell when the value for -heap is too large, because Scheme will fail with an error when you try to start it. If you've tried the maximum heap size possible, have you tried using bchscheme instead? It allows the use of heap sizes twice as large as scheme. 5. The method that fails to compile is pregexp-match-positions-aux which is the heart of the system. I doubt very much that this is a bug in the compiler. (At least, not a new bug. :) That procedure is pretty large and has lots of internal procedure calls that make the data-flow analysis complex. The problem is that the core data-flow algorithm is quadratic in the number of links in the graph, both for time and space. So for highly interconnected calling patterns it uses a _lot_ of memory. Modifying the algorithm to use a limited amount of memory is non-trivial, and not likely to happen any time soon. Please see if you can get it to work by throwing memory at it. BTW, you can see how the heap changes by calling (toggle-gc-notification!) to turn on GC notification. 8. My guess is that the OOM is a red herring which is a result of exceeding a pre-set size limit in the compiler or code generator, or when an error message of the actual problem is attempted to be generated. No. There aren't any pre-set limits in the compiler. The only limit is the heap size. Actually, this code could be considerably improved and simplified, by several techniques: changing the control structure to isolate some of the internal procedures; using a dispatch architecture; or best of all, using a byte-coded abstract machine. (Note that the last approach is the one used by GNU Emacs, and has some very nice performance advantages.) Another idea would be to use MIT/GNU Scheme's built-in RE support. This support is Emacs-like, so it doesn't directly map to Perl REs, but you could hide this using an abstraction. For example, see the rexp abstraction in recent versions of MIT Scheme; this is easier to work with and is also easily extended to handle new functionality. That's right. It's purely a (quadratic) function of the complexity of the data-flow graph.
