From cph at zurich.ai.mit.edu Fri Apr 18 16:23:05 2003 From: cph at zurich.ai.mit.edu (Chris Hanson) Date: Sat Dec 3 00:52:13 2005 Subject: [info-cscheme] Status update on MIT Scheme Message-ID: Hi all, This is a status update on MIT Scheme. As I previously announced, MIT Scheme is in the process of moving to Savannah. This process is nearly complete, but a few glitches remain. * As you might have guessed, MIT Scheme has been accepted into and is now officially a part of the GNU project. The most visible consequence of this change is that the program's name has been changed to "MIT/GNU Scheme". And yes, I know that this is clumsy, but RMS and I negotiated over this and it was the best available compromise we could reach. You, of course, are free to refer to the program as you wish, but all official documentation will use the new name. As I stated in my previous message, MIT retains the copyright on the sources for this project, and I will remain the project leader. So don't expect radical changes just yet. However, it's my intention to encourage others to gradually take over development of the project. I'd like my role to be reduced to overall leadership, technical guidance, and the occasional hack. Depending on the interests of the participants, the project will probably change its direction over time. However, I intend to insist that this remain a reliable and mature system, as so many people depend on it. * The official home page of the project is now http://www.gnu.org/software/mit-scheme/ while the Savannah project page is https://savannah.gnu.org/projects/mit-scheme/ At some point I will redirect the old home page to point to the new one. (One nice feature for those of you who have read this far is that the new home page has release notes for the upcoming 7.8.0 release.) * The project has been CVS hosted on Savannah since my last announcement, and that continues to work. Up-to-date sources and change entries can be browsed using the CVS web interface, or directly by using anonymous CVS access. However, don't try to build the latest system from source; there have been some representational changes which mean the 7.7.1 compiler won't produce working code from the current sources. * Most of the other elements of the Savannah project are now in place. A new set of web pages has been developed and deployed. Various mailing lists have been created, and some subprojects and tasks have been written down. At this point I would like to encourage anyone interested in helping to develop MIT/GNU Scheme to contact me. The tasks list is a good place to start if you're looking for something to do. I also have a more extensive list of projects that aren't yet posted. And other changes are welcome; I don't claim to be the only one with good ideas about where this program should go. :) * There is a problem with the mailing lists in that most of them don't currently work. This is not something I can fix directly; I'm waiting for the GNU site maintainers to fix it. But I submitted the request over a week ago and haven't heard back yet. So the mailing lists won't be officially active until whenever they get around to fixing the problem. When the mailing lists are finally working, I plan to migrate email as follows: 1. All subscribers to this mailing list (info-cscheme) will be transferred to the new list "mit-scheme-announce@gnu.org". 2. The address "info-cscheme@zurich.ai.mit.edu" will forward to "mit-scheme-users@gnu.org". Initially, no one will be subscribed to this list; if you want to subscribe you'll have to take action to make it happen. Although the list isn't relaying mail, you _can_ subscribe to it. 3. The address "bug-cscheme@zurich.ai.mit.edu" will forward to "bug-mit-scheme@gnu.org". * Finally: I will be releasing a new version of MIT/GNU Scheme in the near future. I had originally planned to do this by the end of April, but there are a couple of tenacious bugs that need fixing first. I'm a little over-committed right now and the deadline is likely to slip into May.
