Message-ID: <446B5F3C.50902@perli.net> Hello! Just recently, I've experienced a problem with the display backlight of my omnibook xe4500: While I'm working in Xorg (although I suspect the problem is a hardware one, not specially associated with Xorg), the backlight of the xe4500's display suddenly switches off and I can't see anything anymore (although I can see the contents when holding a bright lamp in front of the display and looking closely). Everything else keeps working (I can ssh into the machine and can also continue my session on another machine using vino to export my local display via VNC). When powering down the xe4500 and switching it on again after some time, the backlight seems to work again. Has anyone experienced the same problem? Is there anything I can do against this or is it simply a sign of the backlight dying? Is it worth replacing/repairing the backlight/display? (Yes, this is the second hardware-related problem mail about the xe4500 today ;) My xe4500's ac adapter (not the one with the two cords, but the part of the ac adapter that is on the back right side of the xe4500, where you plug in the power cord) makes a humming noise when charging, which is a little bit annoying. More recently, it sometimes simply stops charging as if the power cord was unplugged, but it isn't. I then have to fiddle around with the plug until it starts charging again, but this doesn't always work. Sometimes, charging doesn't start until the xe4500 has drained its batteries and it loses power - as soon as it has lost power (and battery capacity went to zero), it starts charging again in powered-off mode - looks like this might be software-related (running kernel 2.6.15). Has anyone experienced similar problems with the xe4500 or a comparable laptop? Is there any hint or solution of this (annoying) problem which I could try? I applied to the mailing list but have not heard anything.. Can you help me out re: Omnibook 800CT I am new to Linux. I was thinking of downloading and installing Linux on my 0mnibook 800CT so I could use as a MP3 player at Tango parties. I was about about to copy the drive when my hard disk drive crashed. I bought it used and it did not come with any of the sw or recovery disk. Does anyone have one? Can I somehow get a copy or download an ISO image? You will really help me out. Thank you. Florentino If you do not have one, are you familiar with any other HP Omnibook 800CT forums or lists? Mine is a 166 mmx.
