SATA doesn't seem to be compatible with ATA - the SATA/ATA adapters I found on eBay are more than just socket converters but actually small circuit boards. Looks like the XE3 is showing its age! I'll just have to stick with the older models - the Hitachi TravelStar 5K100 with is an ATA-100/PATA drive with 100GB. I guess that's about the limit for ATA drives.
